Keith Jarrett may well be one of the greatest composers of modern times. From 1967 through 2018, he’s released more than 100 albums of Free Jazz, Fusion, Jazz Rock, Classical, Soul, Rock, as well as solo Piano. He was a sideman with Art Blakey, Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis during their most experimental and explosive eras. He’s led several highly regarded fusion bands, recorded with full Orchestras, and played the finest concert halls of the World. He started composing and performing his own works alongside classical interpretations at age 8! Now retired after a serious health issues in 2018, his legacy as a modern composer continues to be celebrated with new archival performance pieces being released yearly.

I’ve known about him as long as I can remember as my Uncle Raymond was deeply into the Köln Concert and Belonging, both constantly on his turntable when I was very young. I sometimes say that I am lucky to be alive at the same time as Mr. Jarrett! His music has not only enriched my listening but also taught me scores about composition, improvisation, and musical experimentation. I still have the same copy of Köln Concert that I heard as a child, and I still get up dance around aimlessly to the boogie-stride whimsical passages. He gets regular weekend play in our home, sometimes hours of his rolling ostinatos and pulsing chords a soundtrack as we read or chat. His music is deeply ingrained in my psyche.
